How to setup BoM routing?

Updated Dec 06, 2025

What is routing?

Routing is a series of steps or operations that are required to manufacture a product. Each operation is performed by a specific work center. Routes enable you to have better control of the manufacturing process and helps you track the progress of a manufacturing order and easily identify bottlenecks.

How to set up routing?

Configuration

To use routing, you must enable the Work Orders setting from the Manufacturing -> Configuration -> Settings menu and click on the Save button.

Setting up work centers

Once you have enabled the setting, go to Manufacturing -> Master Data -> Work centers to Create the work centers that will be used in the routing. Click on Save when done.

Each work center represents a station (comprised of workers and/or machines.) A work center is used for costing, scheduling, capacity planning, etc.

Setting up routing

To set up routing, go to Manufacturing -> Master Data -> Routing and click on the Create button. Enter a name for Routing and using the Add a line link to define the operations for the routing.

For each operation that you set up in a routing, a work order is automatically created when a manufacturing order that uses the specific routing is confirmed.

You can attach PDF worksheets or Google slides in the Work Sheet tab while setting up an operation. Worksheets attached to an operation are displayed to the user in the work order form.

Assigning routing to a BoM

To set up routing on a BoM, go to Manufacturing -> Master Data -> Bill of Materials and select the routing to use in the Routing field. You can also specify which operation will consume each component of the BoM using the Consumed in Operation field.
